Rose Park
Historic homes in Rose Park
Rose Park is best known as one of Long Beach’s historic districts, with well-preserved homes built between the 1920s and 1940s. Residents sit under the eaves of the large Craftsman porches. Spanish bungalows are shaded by trees as old as the houses themselves. “A lot of the houses are Spanish Revivals or Craftsman,” says Long Beach resident Scott Underwood, a Realtor at Meadowbrook Realty. “Many of the houses were built a hundred years ago, and many of those are protected by the Mills Act, so they have to be preserved. The neighborhood has been reenergized lately, and a lot of new people are coming in and looking to fix up the houses. Only the exterior has to be preserved, so people have more freedom inside.” While the neighborhood association enforces the preservation of the integrity of these older homes, some owners have enrolled their property in the Mills Act Program, a California initiative to protect historic homes in exchange for prestige and a significant tax break. Many of these historic homes have been divided into multiple units; these multiunit properties range from $800,000 to over $2 million, depending on the property size. For those who want a single-family home, prices start at $725,000 but can exceed $1 million. The neighborhood's namesake park
The neighborhood gets its name from Rose Park, one of Long Beach’s oldest parks. The small park, located in the middle of an Eighth Street roundabout, is landscaped with its namesake roses and a gazebo. The neighborhood association hosts many events there and it gets plenty of traffic in general. “Lots of people like to walk their dogs there,” says Danielle Potter Dague, board member of the Neighborhood Association. “When you’re out walking, you’re always going to see neighbors and get a ‘hello’ from somebody.” For more outdoor space, Recreation Park is 1.5 miles from Rose Park. The park lives up to its name, offering a golf course, playground, sports fields, dog park and a community center spread over 200 acres.Events held in Rose Park
“We organize a lot of activities out of Rose Park that always get a big turnout,” says Dague. “We have our summertime picnic and a holiday party in December. Some residents also host an annual neighborhood block party every August.” The summer celebration involves a watermelon eating contest and live music. The summer party centers around a picnic, so people bring lawn chairs and snacks. Around the holidays, the neighborhood association brings in food and a DJ.Grocery stores and restaurants within walking distance on Seventh Street
“It’s a very convenient area close to a lot of shopping and restaurants,” says Underwood. Northgate Market, which sits in the neighborhood's northwest corner, sells groceries and household essentials. Belmont Center, a large shopping complex in the neighborhood's northeast, is home to a Food 4 Less, fast food restaurants and some clothing shops. About two miles outside the neighborhood, Von’s Circle Center offers several big box chains, including Marshalls, Ross and Lucky Feet. A Ralphs grocery store can also be found here. “You’re close to a lot of great food,” says Dague. “Rivera’s on Seventh Street is a great family-owned restaurant, and Cody Lusby, a local artist, decorated its exterior.” Locals enjoy grabbing a chai latte or a cold brew from Wood Coffee Company on their way to work. Thai Curry Pizza caters to people struggling to choose between ordering Italian or Thai. Locals kick back at El Patio Fine Tacos and Beer, which has everything from quesadillas to chicken, waffles and fajitas.Kids attend highly rated Long Beach schools
Kids start school at Willard Elementary School, which Niche gave a B-minus. For middle school, they can attend Jefferson Leadership Academy, graded B-plus. Kids can finish up at Woodrow Wilson High School, graded B-plus. Throughout high school, students will be enrolled in an academic pathway: the School of the Arts, the School of Leadership and Public Service, the School of Medicine and Biotechnology, the School of Technology, or the liberal arts-themed Wilson Academic Vision of Excellence program.A walker's paradise in Rose Park
"It's very walkable, and you’re close to all sorts of things,” says Dague. “There are bike lanes, and we’re also trying to encourage more people to ride bikes.” A bike lane on Junipero Avenue provides direct access to Junipero Beach, only a mile south of Rose Park. For drivers, East Seventh Street is the main corridor throughout greater Long Beach, as well as for shopping and dining. Long Beach Airport is 4 miles north of Rose Park. and there is bus service throughout the neighborhood.
