The road from peace to liveliness is just a short drive away
While the Hale neighborhood of Minneapolis exudes a suburban vibe - with its quiet streets and friendly neighbors - it doesn't shy away from urban offerings. The community is conveniently located near major highways, providing easy access to downtown Minneapolis and all of the lively energy it exudes. “Literally everything is nearby and many people I deal with want to drive less,” says Patrick Paulson, Realtor with EXIT Realty. Hale's rich history is woven into its very fabric. The neighborhood takes its name from the beloved Nathan Hale Elementary School, a community cornerstone since the 1920s. The architecture throughout Hale reflects various styles, with many homes built in the 1920s and 30s. The nearly century-old iconic Parkway Theater further cements Hale’s historical place, showcasing various modern arts and entertainment performances and presentations in the restored landmark.

What’s not here is probably not too far away
Hale’s surrounding neighborhoods provide the shopping destinations, like in Windom where many residents pick up groceries and essentials at the Cub Foods. Nearby, Bachman’s Floral, Home & Garden isn’t just a home store, it’s a local institution. The family owned horticultural center has been in business for nearly 140 years and has its corporate headquarters in Windom. Inside the garden center is Patrick’s Bakery & Café, known for its sandwiches, pastries and quiche. Outside the storefront, a seating area in the greenhouse is set up to resemble a quaint Parisian café. To the south in Diamond Lake, Home Depot and Target sit conveniently off Cedar Avenue. Residents of Hale don’t have to look very far for places to dine out either. Hot Plate is a quirky, family friendly breakfast spot offering artisanal twists on hearty American fare. The lighting is funky and eclectic and the walls crowded with random artwork, mostly paint-by-numbers. Huie’s Chow Mein is a no-frills, old-school Chinese restaurant that serves the classics. And diners say this cash-only neighborhood favorite is priced just right. Heather’s is a neighborhood eatery serving sandwiches, burgers, brunch staples and wine. The inside is cool and contemporary, with minimalist tables and big picture windows.

Playing outdoors and on one of the city’s three sailing lakes
One of the defining features of Hale is its undeniable connection to nature. Bordered on the north by Minnehaha Creek and the east by Nokomis Lake Park, the neighborhood boasts ample green space to unwind and explore. Weekends can be spent kayaking on the calm waters of Nokomis Lake, biking along the scenic trails of the creek, or simply picnicking in the lush park. Lake Nokomis, one of three sailing lakes in the city park system, draws boaters looking for a pristine day on the water. Visitors can rent a canoe, kayak, paddleboard or even a boat at Wheel Fun Rentals. Bicycle rental is also available to ride the designated trails along the perimeter of the water. Residents and visitors also can be found casting a reel from Nokomis Pier or lounging in the sun on the beach, a quiet sandy oasis just minutes from the city. There’s also access to Diamond Lake, which is a delicate ecosystem situated on nearly 80 acres but not fully recreational.

Housing options vary, but demand means competition
Because of perpetually low inventory and its proximity to Lake Nokomis, Hale’s real estate market is highly competitive. Still, because the community's median sale price of $470,000 is much higher than the rest of the city, houses tend to stay on the market longer. Most of the homes were built between the 1920s and 1940s, with higher starting price points closer to the lake, anywhere from $400,000 to almost $1 million. The streets of Hale are lined with classic Cape Cods, two-story Colonials, distinctly colorful Craftsman-style homes and even the occasional head-turning modern build. Single-family homes in Hale generally range between $430,000 and $650,000. “When we talk about the neighborhoods in south Minneapolis, because they’re so close together you can literally walk from one to another, what attracts people to these areas are usually the same things,” Paulson says.
