Windom
Suburban Neighborhood in Minneapolis, Minnesota
Hennepin County 55419

Abundance of classic homes
“When my wife moved in here 10 years ago, she was really taken with the diversity in the style of homes,” Ley says. “You’re going to see a lot of Cape Cods and, like in a lot of Minneapolis, you’re going to see some Mediterranean style as well.” The Windom streets and spacious sidewalks are also lined with pre-World War II bungalows and ranches. “It’s one of the last places to find a real value in a home in a city neighborhood,” Ley says. Inventory is low in Windom, with few houses hitting the market, but there are homes to be had under $300,000. Although the median sales price is around $359,000, large, recently renovated homes in the neighborhood can hit the half-million mark or higher.Get out for some fresh air
For a day outdoors, parents can take their children to Windom South Park to burn off some energy after school. Residents are also just a few miles from the expansive lakefront Veterans Park. Vets park has outdoor recreation for all seasons, with an outdoor pool and skatepark to enjoy during the warmer months, and an outdoor ice rink for the winter. Diamond Lake Park is a popular fishing spot, with an abundance of carp and other fish.Nearby Minneapolis public schools
The neighborhood is served by the Windom Community School, which promises highly individualized instruction with a focus on small group learning and offers bilingual immersion. Windom South Park sits adjacent and opens to the public after school lets out. “The neighborhood, the school board and the park invested in new park equipment that was changed out about 10 years ago,” says Pat Soulak, one of the founding members of the Windom Community Council and a 35-year resident. After attending Windom students will go to Anthony Middle School, with a B overall Niche grade, followed by Southwest High School, an International Baccalaureate school with an A-minus Niche grade.Neighborhood greenhouse
Bachman’s Floral, Home & Garden isn’t just a home store, it’s a neighborhood institution. The family-owned horticultural center has been in business nearly 140 years and has its corporate headquarters in Windom. Inside the garden center is Patrick’s Bakery & Café, known for their sandwiches, pastries and quiches. Outside the storefront is a seating area in the greenhouse, set up like a quaint Parisian café. “It’s a nice little restaurant with plants all around, and you feel like in the middle of winter, even when it’s 20 below, that spring is right around the corner because of all the foliage,” Soulak says. The large greenhouse is host to the Winter Market, an indoor farmer’s market that runs on Saturdays through the prohibitively cold months of November through March.Easy access to downtown
Windom provides its residents with easy access to major highways including Interstate 35 West and Interstate 494. Public transportation through Metro Transit is also in the area. Windom is conveniently located 6 miles from downtown Minneapolis and about 20 miles from St. Paul.Eat Street
“Nicollet Avenue has been historically known as Eat Street – starting downtown and ending in Windom,” says Mario Vargas, Executive Director of the Windom Community Council. Looking for something south of the border to nosh? Orale is a veteran-owned Mexican restaurant that has thrived thanks to neighborhood support. “I heard they serve a mean margarita,” Ley says. Come for the fish tacos and margaritas and stay for a laugh; Orale hosts open mic standup every Wednesday. In the mood for American fare instead? Roll into The Patty Wagon, a classic burger joint with tasty salads that attracts families with kids. For a more adult vibe, head next door to the Tailgate Sports Café, which shares the same owner and the same sense of whimsy. You can’t miss Tailgate thanks to its adventurous décor – it looks like an old red truck crashed through the sign above its entryway. The bar atmosphere is casual, and the kitchen cranks out pizza, sandwiches and walleye fingers seven days a week until 1 am. “Try the waffle fries at either location,” Ley says. “Maybe served with a cold craft beer.” Come take a walk down Eat Street and taste what Windom has to offer.
