Living large in La Loma
La Loma, which in Spanish means “The Hill,” is one of the largest neighborhoods in Modesto. Only a mile east of downtown, residents enter the neighborhood on La Loma Avenue, where roundabouts bring cyclists through a streetscape of marvelous midcentury homes and colorful Spanish Revivals on a route bordered by oak trees and narrow sidewalks. “I think La Loma has a great sense of community,” says Catrina?Girard, a lifelong resident in Modesto and Real Estate Agent at The Girard Group. “It’s kind of rare to see a property that’s over an acre next to downtown, and that’s what you get in La Loma that you don’t get in other places.”
Custom abodes and backyard pools
Custom-built Spanish Revivals sit on lawns next to towering palms and Italian cypress trees with pebble gardens and mulch flowerbeds. Low-stacked bricks border front yards, and wooden or white vinyl fences partition backyards with in-ground pools. Remodeled bungalows and midcentury ranch-style homes were built in the 1950s and 1960s. “There used to be a bunch of run-down houses here. In the 2000s, people bought and fixed them up. We have a great little neighborhood right here,” says Kevin Patrick, a small business owner who has lived here since the 1990s. The Airport section of La Loma connects to the Modesto City-County Airport, with spacious roads weaving between manufactured homes. Home prices typically range from $200,000 to $900,000. A three-bedroom ranch-style home costs between $300,000 and $700,000, while a five-bedroom home falls between $500,000 and $900,000.
