A community with stellar schools and surfing
Minutes away from the surf and sand of Oceanside Beach is the quiet residential enclave of Loma Alta. This suburban neighborhood is also close to the Marine Corps base of Camp Pendleton, though it’s far enough removed to not have any noise disturbances. “It’s a very family-oriented community, the weather is the ultimate, and schools are the best you can get. Most students move on to a four-year university,” says Terence Webster, longtime local and Real Estate Agent at Buchanon & Associates. “Right now, it’s got the cheapest coastal community properties in southern California by far.”
Homes upon the hill
Cul-de-sacs throughout Loma Alta are lined with palm trees. “It’s one of the more desirable areas,” says Jonny Kohl, Realtor at Compass and has lived in North County Coastal San Diego area for many years. “It’s on a hill. At the bottom of the hill is Oceanside Boulevard, a busy street. The homes right on the boulevard have road noise, but as you go up the hill, there’s no traffic or noise.” Some single-family homes date back to the 1920s, but many were built between the ‘50s and ‘60s. Houses tend to have Mediterranean-style influences, whether they are New Traditionals or classic ranch-styles with enclosed garages. Many have spacious lots with plenty of yard space. Prices range from $570,000 to $1.5 million. Apartments for rent are also available.
Oceanside Unified School District
Public schools are located toward the southern end of the neighborhood. Students may attend Mission Elementary, rated C-plus on Niche, Lincoln Middle, rated B and Oceanside High School, rated B. The high school offers various Career and Technical Education courses, ranging from kinesiology to design to law enforcement.
From surfing to golfing
One of the biggest advantages of living in Loma Alta is that it’s just 3 miles away from Oceanside Beach. “Surfing is very big near Oceanside Pier and the harbor,” Kohl says. In fact, Oceanside is home to the California Surf Museum. “In the winter, you can surf, see snow by midday – Big Bear is a 2-hour drive – and still be back for the sunset,” Webster says. But for recreation within the neighborhood itself, Buddy Todd Park offers picnic-friendly green spaces as well as basketball and volleyball courts. Plus, “There’s a golf course where you’re allowed to bring your dog,” Kohl says; this is Goat Hill Park, a public 18-hole golf course that’s been a community staple since 1952.
Shopping, nightlife and going out to eat
Some homes are within walking and biking distance to the shopping and dining options along Oceanside Boulevard and Mission Avenue. 1910 Tap House offers casual pub fare and Frida’s Taqueria serves up hearty burritos. Frazier Farms supplies the area with groceries and deli options. There are also several shopping plazas, with shops ranging from thrift stores to international markets. Downtown Oceanside is home to Dija Mara, a popular place for Balinese food, and The Rooftop Bar, the local nightlife spot.
Getting around by car, light rail or bus
Loma Alta is conveniently located near Interstate 5 and Highway 76, which can get congested during the morning rush hour. For a commuting alternative, there are two light rail stations near the southern edge of Loma Alta – El Camino Real Station and Crouch Street Station. The rail line extends to the Oceanside Transit Center and southwest to Escondido. Additionally, North County Transit District bus stops throughout the neighborhood take passengers across North San Diego County. The Tri-City Medical Center is about 5 miles southeast. San Diego International Airport is about 39 miles south down Interstate 5.
Coming soon to Loma Alta
Loma Alta has big plans for future developments. “Resorts in the community are vying for space to build. A large soccer stadium is getting built here, a basketball team is moving here, and a concert arena,” Webster says. Plus, “A wave pool is coming in 2026,” Kohl adds.
