Peace and quiet in Richmond’s Southside
Seven miles south of downtown Richmond, Walmsley is a friendly residential area offering community and convenience. “We’ve been there four years and for us, it’s been very nice and quiet,” says Tony Ralda, owner of the Walmsley-based mobile detailing company Ralda’s Details. “The neighbors are okay and it’s safe. I go outside and run in the mornings and haven’t had any issues.” Keeping with the community vibe, the neighborhood is home to a handful of corner markets and small churches where residents meet and greet throughout the week.

Richmond public transit and quick access to Interstate 95
Beginning at Southside Plaza, Greater Richmond Transit Company route 86 follows Broad Rock Boulevard and serves stops on Walmsley as far as Banton Street. Sidewalks are limited in the area, so most residents own a car for commuting. The east end of Walmsley Boulevard connects to Richmond Highway, which can take drivers into the city or connect them to Interstate 95, just five miles away via Chippenham Parkway.

Local markets and food trucks
There are a handful of locally-owned restaurants in Walmsley. Taqueria is a local favorite of Ralda’s that usually sets up near the El Toro banquet hall and serves beef tacos in fresh corn tortillas. “There’s also Granizadas,” says Ralda. “That’s another mobile place but they sell ice cream. It’s very good.” Walmsley Market maintains a wide selection of household necessities and grab-n-go items, but residents can head to Food Lion on Richmond Highway for serious grocery trips.

Fishing in Falling Creek
The nearby Broad Rock Sports Complex offers a baseball field, a basketball court and a playground with a small rock climbing wall. While there’s no official park surrounding the reservoir, residents can head to the Falling Creek reservoir to drop a line and catch some large-mouth bass, bluegill, and black crappie. Falling Creek eventually lets out in the James River, but just before the river, there’s Falling Creek Ironworks Park.

A mix of one and two-story homes
Brick and vinyl ranch-style homes dominate the neighborhood, especially along Walmsley Boulevard. Still, some of the newer homes in the area are Colonial two-story homes sitting on roughly quarter-acre lots. Homes typically sit close to one another and have shallow front yards with tidy landscaping on lots ranging from a quarter to a half-acre. The median selling price is $237,250, but prices can range from $210,000 for a five-bedroom Dutch Colonial with 2,600 square feet of space to $400,000 for a newly constructed, 2,200-square-foot four-bedroom townhouse. “It’s hard to find homes at a decent price right now,” Ralda says. “But for the area, I think it’s good. You still can get something more affordable than other places.”

Once-in-a-lifetime storms
While Walmsley residents are unlikely to find themselves knee-deep in water, Hurricane Gaston in 2004 introduced the possibility of floods to the neighborhood as the rising waters of Falling Creek washed away a local bridge and threatened the failure of its dam. The neighborhood was spared major destruction, but downtown Richmond saw historic flooding due to the hurricane.
