Growth and redevelopment near Woodville
Compact midcentury homes rest beside newly constructed row houses, illustrating the ongoing development in Woodville, a small neighborhood in Richmond's East End. "As a long term resident of Woodville, it's been great to see the growth in the area over the years. We can now walk to a local grocery store, as well as the frequently held community events at the Sarah Garland Jones Center," says Vanessa Dieterly, a Realtor with Nest Realty and a Woodville resident. In 2024, Richmond's mayor broke ground on a mixed-income redevelopment in neighboring Creighton Court. Other plans for the area include the construction of more grocery stores since, until recently, Woodville was part of a food desert. The neighborhood has also historically had high crime rates, receiving a score of 7 out of 10 on the CAP Index, but city initiatives, like the introduction of community mediators, are working to combat violent crime in the area.

Cooking classes and events at the Sarah Garland Jones Center
Residents can follow the sidewalks to the Bon Secours Center for Healthy Living Sarah Garland Jones Center, located along Nine Mile Road. "Various organizations throw block parties there with music, food, and sometimes bounce houses and games for kids," Dieterly says. "They also host outdoor movie nights there throughout the year. The center itself offers various programs, including cooking classes and a number of wellness classes." There is a softball field nearby, and Jefferson Park is about 1 mile west, with a playground and benches overlooking downtown Richmond. Come summertime, kids flock to the public Woodville Pool to escape the heat and humidity. The pool has a splash area and hosts learn-to-swim lessons through Richmond Parks & Recreation. At the Robinson Theater Community Arts Center, about 1 mile south, East End residents can take hip-hop lessons and Zumba classes in the afternoons. The Robinson is named for Richmond native, Bill Robinson, who starred in several movies alongside Shirley Temple.

Other East End events
In addition to the offerings at the Sarah Garland Jones Center, many events take place throughout the East End. The annual three-day Church Hill Irish Festival is held around St. Patrick's Day at the corner of 25th and East Broad Streets. There are bagpipers and Irish dancers, as well as food stalls and a children's area. In Libby Hill Park, there are often neighborhood yard sales in spring and fall, and barbecue fans come there to sample smoked meats during the annual Hog on the Hill festival. The Robinson Theater also hosts community events, including a fall block party and regular movie nights.
New builds and lower home prices in Woodville
There are a few remaining early 1900s row houses, but many of the older homes are Cape Cods and cottages from the 1950s and '60s. As the East End becomes a more popular place to live and buyers are getting priced out of neighboring Church Hill, development is increasing in Woodville. Most of the newer builds are two-story row houses, built in the late Victorian-style that is popular throughout the East End. Lots are relatively compact, with narrow, grassy front lawns and larger backyards. On-street parking is common throughout the community, though some homeowners have created private spots along the rear alleyways. "Homes are still affordable in Woodville and sell for less than the Richmond median home price," Dieterly says. Listings generally range from $200,000 to $350,000.

Restaurants in nearby Church Hill
The Market at 25th is just a few blocks from most Woodville homes. It carries a full range of groceries, but prices tend to be a little higher than the larger chain grocery stores about 4 miles east. There's a Family Dollar across from the market, and there are a few takeout restaurants along Nine Mile Road as well. For additional dining options, residents can head into nearby Church Hill, which is becoming a Richmond dining hotspot. Casual options include Soul N' Vinegar, which offers fruity smoothies, falafel and blackened shrimp bowls, and Liberty Public House, with an extensive menu of American classics. There are also several upscale restaurants, including The Roosevelt and Metzger Bar and Butchery, which often require reservations, even on a weeknight. At the corner of 25th Street and Jefferson Avenue stands the Sub Rosa Bakery. Its owner, Evin Dogu, has been repeatedly nominated as a James Beard outstanding baker. Ice cream lovers might enjoy Spotty Dog Ice Cream Co., where flavors range from the more common — like mint chunk — to slightly bizarre options, such as miso-peanut butter and jelly.
