The neighborhood’s name, which means “good herb” in Spanish, comes from Yerba Buena High School, which is within walking distance of most homes. Its various housing options include single-family homes, apartment complexes and condo communities, and Coyote Creek and its parallel walking trail touch the neighborhood’s west side, leading to the sprawling Kelley Park and its zoo. Yerba Buena is also only a mile away from San Jose’s Little Saigon community, which offers dozens of shops and restaurants focused around Vietnamese culture and traditions.

Mix of single-family homes and apartment buildings

Because of the number of apartment buildings in Yerba Buena, most residents are renters. Its few single-family homes sit along private, quiet streets across from Yerba Buena High School. Common housing styles include contemporary Craftsman homes and midcentury ranch-style builds with attached garages; homes sit on lots with paved driveways and landscaped front lawns. Yerba Buena’s apartment complexes date back to the late 20th century and include a mix of traditional-style condo units and townhomes with stucco facades. Single-family properties sell between approximately $900,000 and $1.2 million, while condo units and townhouses carry price tags ranging from $350,000 to $730,000.

Kelley Park spans more than 170 acres of outdoor space

With more than 170 acres of parkland, Kelley Park is one of the top outdoor destinations in the city. People flock to the park to visit the Happy Hollow Park & Zoo, which has a petting zoo and dozens of wildlife exhibits. "Happy Hollow is very much geared toward little kids, so you'll see a lot of families there because the kids really love the zoo," says Ruth Mistry, a local broker associate with Compass who has sold homes in the Bay Area for the past several decades. "Next door to the zoo is the Japanese Friendship Garden, which is full of koi ponds and is very quiet. It's where people often go to sit on benches and enjoy some outdoor peace and relaxation." The garden was built in 1966 and was inspired by the Korakuen Garden in Okayama, Japan, which is often considered San Jose’s “Sister City.” Sports enthusiasts can play a round at the 21-hole Kelley Park Disc Golf Course, while history buffs can go to History Park to learn about Santa Clara Valley’s past. On the weekends, many locals often make the 45-minute drive to the coastal beaches of Santa Cruz or the hour-long drive to the scenic Sierra Nevada mountain range.
