Yerba Buena
Mix of single-family homes and apartment buildings
Because of the number of apartment buildings in Yerba Buena, most residents are renters. Its few single-family homes sit along private, quiet streets across from Yerba Buena High School. Common housing styles include contemporary Craftsman homes and midcentury ranch-style builds with attached garages; homes sit on lots with paved driveways and landscaped front lawns. Yerba Buena’s apartment complexes date back to the late 20th century and include a mix of traditional-style condo units and townhomes with stucco facades. Single-family properties sell between approximately $900,000 and $1.2 million, while condo units and townhouses carry price tags ranging from $350,000 to $730,000.Yerba Buena High School serves secondary students
Most students in kindergarten through sixth grade who live in Yerba Buena can attend Robert F. Kennedy Elementary, which receives a C-plus rating from Niche. These students can move on to the C-rated Bridges Academy, which serves grades seven and eight. Kindergarten through eighth grade students living in the southern end of the neighborhood are zoned for Stonegate Elementary, which has an overall B-minus rating. The B-plus-rated Yerba Buena High School serves all secondary students in this area and offers specialized courses in engineering and architecture. Grades five through eight can also apply to the KIPP Heritage Academy, a highly rated public charter school recognized as a 2024 California Distinguished School.Kelley Park spans more than 170 acres of outdoor space
With more than 170 acres of parkland, Kelley Park is one of the top outdoor destinations in the city. People flock to the park to visit the Happy Hollow Park & Zoo, which has a petting zoo and dozens of wildlife exhibits. "Happy Hollow is very much geared toward little kids, so you'll see a lot of families there because the kids really love the zoo," says Ruth Mistry, a local broker associate with Compass who has sold homes in the Bay Area for the past several decades. "Next door to the zoo is the Japanese Friendship Garden, which is full of koi ponds and is very quiet. It's where people often go to sit on benches and enjoy some outdoor peace and relaxation." The garden was built in 1966 and was inspired by the Korakuen Garden in Okayama, Japan, which is often considered San Jose’s “Sister City.” Sports enthusiasts can play a round at the 21-hole Kelley Park Disc Golf Course, while history buffs can go to History Park to learn about Santa Clara Valley’s past. On the weekends, many locals often make the 45-minute drive to the coastal beaches of Santa Cruz or the hour-long drive to the scenic Sierra Nevada mountain range.Nearby shopping malls and restaurant options near Little Saigon
Toward the southern end of the neighborhood is a small strip mall where residents can dine at eateries like Hawaiian Drive Inn, a longstanding local haunt serving authentic Hawaiian comfort classics like chicken katsu and loco moco. Also in this strip mall is Daily Donuts, a convenient grab-and-go breakfast spot serving fresh coffee, and Com Tam Dat Thanh, a popular Vietnamese restaurant specializing in noodle soups, rice platters and vermicelli. One mile up McLaughlin Road is San Jose’s Little Saigon community, one of the largest Little Saigon's in the country. Between the Grand Century Shopping Mall and Vietnam Town commercial area, locals can explore over 100 traditional South Asian restaurants, small businesses and boutique shops. Next door to Little Saigon is a Walmart Supercenter, where people go for groceries and household necessities. Two miles outside the neighborhood is the Eastridge Shopping Mall, which houses dozens of clothing retailers, department stores and chain eateries.Access to Route 101
Commuters in Yerba Buena have easy access to Route 101, which Mistry describes as "the main artery that will take residents straight up through San Jose and into Silicon Valley." The 101 also connects to Interstates 680 and 280, two other prominent thoroughfares. Bus services in this neighborhood are operated by Valley Transportation Authority. San Jose Mineta International Airport is a 7-mile drive north and offers dozens of direct flights to major cities across the United States. The nearest hospital is the Santa Clara Valley Medical Center, which sits just under 3 miles away and has a 24-hour emergency services department.
