Belmont Heights
Long Beach eras of construction represented in Belmont Heights
Sidewalks pass century-old homes, shaded by tall palms and dense fruit trees. Belmont Heights’ famous feral parrots help themselves to the fruit from the many fig and orange trees and rest on the eaves of Craftsman homes or Tudor turrets.“What’s appealing about Belmont Heights is that it isn’t a cookie-cutter development,” says Neely. “Each house you walk past will be different from the one next door. Because it wasn’t developed as a set development, all eras of the city are represented here.” Craftsman Bungalows are ubiquitous, ranging in price from $935,000 to $1.9 million. Spanish Revival homes are popular, spanning one-bedroom homes for under $800,000 to $3 million villas.
The neighborhood encompasses two historic districts that have stood for over a century. Owners of historic homes cannot alter the outside of a historic home and can only maintain its original integrity. Building additions should be cohesive with the house's style and cannot be visible from the road. The city enforces this, using standards set by the Secretary of the Interior.

Belmont Heights kids typically begin at Lowell Elementary School before advancing to Rogers Middle School. They will graduate from Woodrow Wilson High School, which offers over a hundred clubs and a robust English department. Wilson produced the city of Long Beach’s first Youth Poet Laureate, Claire Beeli.Swimming at the beach and Colorado Lagoon and visiting Recreation Park
“We don’t have big rolling lawns, so parks are important,” says Neely. The neighborhood is framed by public parks and nature. The over 200-acre Recreation Park offers visitors many activities, like the Billie Jean King Tennis Center, an 18-hole golf course, and a lawn bowling green. Below the park, Colorado Lagoon is a a wetland area with a playground, picnic tables, a sandy beach and a pier ideal for swimming on a hot day. The neighborhood stretched down to the shores of the Pacific. Long Beach City Beach is sought for its surfing, swimming and coastal views. Visitors who don’t want to get wet can lay out or explore the paved paths.Dining and shopping accessible by foot
Belmont Heights is highly walkable, scoring an 83 out of 100 on WalkScore. This aspect entices homebuyers who want easy access to shopping and dining. “It’s a hugely walkable neighborhood,” says Neely. “We bought here because you could run down to the store and grab something or walk to meet friends at a neighborhood bar. You don’t have to get in your car to get anything.”For drivers, the neighborhood sits away from Long Beach’s highways but is framed by thoroughfares East 7th Street and Ocean Boulevard. For those traveling farther away, Long Beach Airport is a four-mile drive from the neighborhood.
Local restaurants in intriguing locales
The neighborhood is full of shopping and dining options steps from the residents’ front door. Neighborhood restaurants span from American classics to Mexican eateries. Some restaurants offer good food in a better location, like The Attic, which operates out of a 1920s Craftsman home in the neighborhood, and the Ubuntu Café, which overlooks the Colorado Lagoon. Belmont Brewing sits on the beach, so residents can grab a drink and watch the waves. The neighborhood has a few local grocers, like specialty Olives Gourmet Grocer and Ma ‘n Pa Grocery, known for breakfast sandwiches and homemade beef jerky. As many homes have fruit trees, the neighbors operate an informal fruit exchange. “You have to be respectful to your neighbors,” says Neely. “You’re very close together, so you want to check in with people and get to know your neighbors. It’s a great neighborhood, and you are responsible for being involved.”
Neely, herself a frequent contributor, says, “We love having people write for our community newsletter. It's all locals, all volunteers. It's a good way for people to learn about things that affect us, like what the city is doing and how we can be involved.” District representatives live in Belmont Heights and write for the newsletter and do community outreach.
