With West Cary Street serving as the nerve center of Carytown, residents of the neighborhood are within easy walking distance of one of Richmond’s most popular shopping and dining destinations. Shoppers can browse the unique (and sometimes indecorous) offerings at Mongrel, check out vintage clothing at Bygones or stock up on specialty herbs and spices at Penzey’s. For groceries, residents can head to Kroger or Publix on the west end of the neighborhood, or they can visit locally owned Ellwood Thompson’s, which offers a smaller selection that focuses on organic and natural products from purveyors within 100 miles of Richmond.
The number of restaurants in Carytown nearly matches the number of retail establishments. Diners can find everything from breakfast to dinner in the neighborhood, as well as coffee and sweet treats to sustain them between meals. Local favorites include the retro-themed Galaxy Diner, French offerings from Can Can Brasserie and authentic Thai cuisine from Mom’s Siam.

Architectural variety reflects rich history
Off the main thoroughfare of Cary Street, buyers will find a veritable kaleidoscope of homes standing sentry over narrow streets lined with mature trees. Homes in the neighborhood tend to be uniform by block, and while one stretch of street will feature modest ranch-style homes in an orderly line, the next block might suddenly feature a line of colonial-style brick rowhouses. The median home price in the neighborhood is $525,000, and buyers should expect to pay an average of $334 per square foot. A typical one-bedroom/one-bathroom condominium can sell for around $165,000, and prices can go up to $1.4 million for a five-bedroom/four-bathroom Greek revival rowhouse with an additional two-bedroom/one-bathroom basement apartment. “The prices in Carytown tend to be more affordable than what you see in either the Museum District or the Fan, but you can still get to all of the places those neighborhoods offer easily,” says MacDougall.

The neighborhood is also within walking distance of both the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and the Virginia Museum of History and Culture.
A quick trip to outdoor recreation
One of Carytown's few shortcomings is in its lack of neighborhood parks. However, the massive Byrd Park is just a mile to the south. Occupying 287 acres, Byrd Park provides visitors with lighted tennis courts and softball fields, multiple lakes for fishing or watching wildlife, picnic shelters and walking trails, as well as plenty of open space for play or relaxation. Byrd Park is also home to Dogwood Dell Amphitheater, which hosts the annual Festival of the Arts, a summer-long program of free outdoor entertainment. When residents are in the mood for a movie, the Byrd Theater, a restored 1928 “motion picture palace” that shows new releases and classic movies, is a Carytown landmark.

Speaking of annual events, Carytown is the site of Richmond’s annual Watermelon Festival, and when Halloween rolls around, Carytown turns into “Scarytown” as the annual Richmond Zombie Walk parades down the street and children trick-or-treat at area businesses.

Carytown is served by the Richmond Public Schools, which earns an overall rating of C-plus from Niche. Students in the neighborhood can attend John B. Cary Elementary, Albert Hill Middle and Thomas Jefferson High School, all of which earn a B rating from Niche. In addition to its proximity to some of the finest shopping and dining in the city, Carytown also offers commuters easy access to virtually anywhere in the city via Cary Street, Interstate 195 or the Downtown Expressway. Virginia Commonwealth University’s Monroe Park campus is just over 2 miles south on Cary Street, and downtown Richmond is 4 miles away on the Downtown Expressway. Both Interstates 64 and 95 are a short drive north on I-195.
