Founded by a group of parents and teachers in 2008, Maple Village Waldorf School began with early childhood programs. Now, the private school serves students from prekindergarten through eighth grade in Long Beach, California. Approximately 90 students attend the school from the Belmont Heights neighborhood.
In 2011, the school began its grades program which opened the school to students in first through eighth grade. The Waldorf education system uses the teachings and principles of the artist and philosopher Rudolf Steiner. This form of education integrates different types of arts into each student's academic curriculum. Each grade level focuses on specific topics such as imitation, memory and core curricula. Along with the core courses, Maple Village Waldorf School offers specialty classes including handwork, Spanish, Japanese, eurythmy, woodworking and more.
Each November, the school hosts the Cultural Harvest Faire. This community event run by parent volunteers features a variety of booths representing different cultures from around the world. The entertainment offered at the Harvest Faire includes various arts and craft projects, games, live music and shows. This event offers a wide range of culinary options, ranging from a farmers market with locally grown produce to food trucks.
