Ranch-style homes on sunny suburban streets
Hellyer’s often sunny streets are lined with 1970s ranch-style homes with attached garages, paved driveways and yards large enough for an ornamental tree. Buyers can also find some 1990s Craftsman- and Mediterranean-influenced new traditional homes, and 1970s townhouses are available in Hellyer’s northwest. The median single-family home price is $1 million, 46% less than San Jose’s median of $1.6 million. Bicycle races at the Hellyer Velodrome
The 178-acre Hellyer County Park in the neighborhood’s east is loaded with ways for residents to enjoy the outdoors. Anglers can cast a line at Cottonwood Lake, and dogs can run around off-leash at the dog park. The playground’s multistory play structures, log slide and splash pad are a hit with kids, and the park’s picnic areas are popular for birthday parties. Cyclists can join training classes and compete in races at the Hellyer Velodrome; they can also hop on the 15-mile Coyote Creek Trail, which connects Hellyer County Park to Anderson Lake in Morgan Hill.At the Seven Trees Community Center to the west, kids can sign up for summer camps and sports leagues, or take crafts and dance classes; the center also has two gyms, a teen center and a recording studio. “People really love our community center,” Maglio says. There are also many houses of worship in multiple faiths, including Mekane Rama Saint Gabriel Cathedral, Family Life Church and the South Bay Afghan Islamic Community Centre.
Medical magnet program at Andrew P. Hill High
Local kids can start at G.W. Hellyer Elementary, which earns a B-minus from Niche, then continue to the C-plus-rated Sylvandale Middle. At the B-rated Andrew P. Hill High, students can enroll in the International Baccalaureate program or the medical magnet program, which offers dual enrollment and certification courses. Alternative options include the private Valley Christian High, which earns an A-plus, and Rocketship Rising Stars, an A-minus-rated charter elementary school.
Trunk or Treat at the Seven Trees Branch Library
The Seven Trees Branch Library, which is in the same building as the Seven Trees Community Center, keeps Hellyer’s residents busy. Throughout the year, the library’s popular story times, kids’ coding classes and ESL classes are full. The library also hosts community events, including June’s Summer Learning Kickoff, where over 100 kids come out for magic shows and a petting zoo. The Seven Trees Trunk or Treat brings out over 500 costumed kids to collect Halloween candy. “It’s a big party in the parking lot,” Maglio says.Just west of Highway 101

Kaiser Permanente San Jose Medical Center is 6 miles south, and San José Mineta International Airport is an 11-mile trip.Shrimp ceviche at La Costa
The West Wind Capitol Flea Market is open year-round, offering bargains on clothing, art and fresh produce. While the market is open most mornings, the space transforms into the West Wind Capitol Drive-In at night, where movie buffs can catch the latest movies from the comfort of their cars. The Seven Trees Shopping Center in Hellyer’s southwest has several restaurants, including La Costa, a walk-up counter with outdoor seating that’s known for their burritos and shrimp ceviche. Breakfast is served at Happy Donuts, which has sweet options like chocolate donuts and almond croissants, as well as savory bagel sandwiches. Grocery options include Marina Grocery and Mi Rancho Supermarket.Wildfire risk east of U.S. Highway 101
Hellyer is close to the wildland-urban interface, an area of increased fire risk that extends east of U.S. Highway 101. Though property damage from wildfires is unlikely, residents may experience reduced air quality from nearby fires in the Diablo Range and Sanat Crus Mountains. Locals can sign up for emergency alerts from Santa Clara County and the city of San Jose.
