Los Altos South
Updated midcentury housing
Northeast of downtown Long Beach, Los Altos South was developed from the late 1940s through the 1960s. The winding streets are lined with sidewalks and larger, well-manicured yards with flourishing garden beds. As for housing options, there are mostly midcentury ranch-style homes and split-levels. That doesn’t mean it’s architecturally uninteresting though. Most houses in the area have been updated and remodeled, increasing the square footage — the neighborhood average is around 1600 square feet — and adding carefully crafted modern exteriors. “The homes in Los Altos were built back when people wanted bigger lots and smaller houses,” says Realtor and resident Joe Sopo who works with Keller Williams Realty. “Things have changed, obviously. There’s hardly a home in the neighborhood that hasn’t added bedrooms or bathrooms over the last few decades.” Ranch-style homes range from $1 million to $1.6 million, while split-levels start from $1 million and go up to $1.5 million. Whichever style, the neighborhood’s homes are sought-after. “There's low inventory, and a lot of buyers wanting to get in,” Sidell says.A centrally located SoCal neighborhood
Los Altos South is about 5 miles from downtown Long Beach. Residents can commute via East Anaheim Street, which can take 20 minutes or longer during rush hour. Situated just south of the 405, the neighborhood is also less than 30 minutes from Hawthorne and Torrance to the west, and Irvine and Anaheim to the east. Plus, it’s just 10 minutes from Junipero Beach. If residents want public transportation, they can hop on a Long Beach Transit bus. For medical services, residents can go to Dignity Health - St. Mary Medical Center, about 5 miles away. The closest major airport is Long Beach Airport, located 3 miles from the neighborhood.Well-rated Long Beach public schools
Students in the area are served by the Long Beach Unified School District, which earns an A grade according to Niche. Gant Elementary School also has an A rating, while Stanford Middle School has an A-minus grade. With an A-plus rating, Millikan High School offers five learning pathways, including performing arts, business and software engineering.Plentiful strip mall retail
The North Los Altos Shopping Center anchors the middle of the neighborhood at the intersection of East Stearns Street and North Bellflower Boulevard, and is walkable from some homes. This convenient strip mall has big box stores and local restaurants. When locals need to pick up groceries, they have their pick of five major supermarkets in the neighborhood, which include Trader Joe’s and organic grocer Lazy Acres. For retail shopping, locals can stop by Target. There are also plenty of restaurant choices, like Sushi Kara, a local spot for sushi and noodles. MVP’s Grill is the neighborhood's go-to sports bar. Kennedy’s Craft Kitchen & Cocktails has a laidback feel and happy hour specials.Municipal parks
Los Altos Park, directly across the street from the North Altos Shopping Center, has a playground with a swing set and plenty of open fields and shady trees. “Stearn’s Park has that family-friendly vibe,” Sidell says. Just to the west of the neighborhood, it offers ballfields, basketball courts and a dog-friendly place to walk. El Dorado Park, only a mile to the east, sprawls over 600 acres of land. The scenic nature park has a public golf course, a large skate park and miles of walking paths around multiple ponds. It's also home to Long Beach’s enormous community garden.Nearby California State University, Long Beach
With California State University Long Beach bordering the neighborhood to the south, the neighborhood has access to campus attractions like Earl Burns Miller Japanese Garden. Ideal for calm strolls, it features a koi pond, waterfalls and bonsai. Plus, Los Altos South residents can easily get to all the events on the CSU Long Beach calendar.
