Winter or summer, Lake Nokomis is this neighborhood’s nucleus
First-time homebuyers who crave living near an abundance of seasonal outdoor activities, have a penchant for ice hockey and don’t mind the occasional hum of airplanes overhead, may think they’ve struck gold in discovering the Keewaydin neighborhood along the shores of Lake Nokomis in Minneapolis. “Keewaydin and the surrounding area is a nature-lover's dream,” says Nick Archer, Realtor with Coldwell Banker Realty and resident of the Nokomis community. Keewaydin residents enjoy front-row seats to the U.S. Pond Hockey Championship and other Lake Nokomis activities in addition to access to property at lower price points than similar Minneapolis neighborhoods. Locals quickly get used to the muffled roar of overhead airplanes and enjoy home prices that are lower than those on the west side of Lake Nokomis. “Once you move here, you might want to stay forever with its great mixture of first-time homebuyers, families and people that have lived in the neighborhood a long time,” Archer says.

Life beyond the porch can start anywhere beyond the porch
Rentable swan boats and stand-up paddleboards may seem like they’re for tourists, but many residents find them a fun way to spend an afternoon on the lake. Summers mean leisurely weekends at the beaches, while winters on the lake are often spent ice fishing and ice skating. Bicycle trails that wrap around Lake Nokomis and Lake Hiawatha are where residents cycle, jog or roller ski in preparation for cross-country skiing in the winter. The short slope that stretches along 31st Avenue becomes a sledding hill in the winter. And the mighty Minnehaha Falls thunder to the east, surrounded by hiking trails and postcard-worthy gardens. Golfers swing their clubs at Nokomis Community Golf Course, while children cool off at the splash pad. The nearby Guthrie Theater stages world-class productions while Town Hall Lanes is a Keewaydin pub and bowling alley in one.

Stepping from the city into the streets of a storybook
Stepping onto Keewaydin's streets is like flipping the pages of a classic American novel, where bungalows and Tudors line the avenues, each boasting unique characteristics. Think charming porches perfect for summer lemonade. There are scattered split-level and two-story homes to make room for that home office or guest bedroom among the bungalows and ranch-style homes. Homes closer to the lake tend to be larger, particularly the classic Tudors and commanding Cape Cods lining Woodlawn Boulevard. Still, home prices range between $135,000 to over $750,000, though the majority are between $300,000 and $450,000. For those seeking modern flair, contemporary townhomes and Craftsman-style abodes are available and offer a fresh perspective.
