A place where small businesses garner huge community support
By the time Bill Findling decided to open Wyatt Cycleworks in the Wenonah neighborhood, he already had some knowledge of the small community where his in-laws lived and where he was a frequent bowler at Town Hall Lanes. “I liked the area and I used to work at Angry Catfish Bicycles and I got to know the area through that,” Findling says. “And when I saw the building become available, I decided to reach out.” Nearly two years since opening his ebike and repair shop, Findling says he doesn’t regret his decision. “It’s been great,” he says. “I’ve met a lot of neighbors and I’ve gotten a lot of community support.” An oasis of single-family homes between Lake Nokomis and the Mississippi River, Findling says Wenonah is a friendly environment with lots of amenities. The community isn’t too far from Mall of America, Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport and has convenient access to downtown, making it a popular choice for first-time homebuyers.

When the falls freeze over…
There’s something about watching the majestic 53-foot Minnehaha Falls freeze over that never ceases to amaze residents or visitors. It’s an experience open to all but a local point of pride for residents who get to witness the transition seasonally. The waterfall, which roars throughout the rest of the year, becomes a silent, majestic sight in winter. Both the waterfall and the surrounding Minnehaha Regional Park are great for summertime visits as well. It include miles of winding trails and the Longfellow Gardens, a large off-leash dog park and a bandshell that hosts live music events in the summer. Bossen Field Park is also a favorite spot to spend a few hours thanks to a playground with a rock-climbing structure. The playground is in the center of several ballfields that are used for softball and baseball leagues.

Modest home inventory is found further away from the lake
A community comprised almost entirely of single-family homes, Wenonah sees prices ranging between $200,000 and $400,000. Bungalows line much of the neighborhood, with minimal traditional and ranch-style houses mixed throughout. “Almost all of the homes in this neighborhood were built mid-century,” says Nick Archer, a Realtor with Coldwell Banker Realty. “They range from more affordable for first-time buyers to the east, but the prices increase as you approach Lake Nokomis on the western side of the neighborhood.” Woodlawn Boulevard has a few custom homes with larger lots and welcoming views of Lake Nokomis.

Roads lead to more than one lake
The lake is circled by a paved bicycle trail that can lead cyclists, joggers and dog-walkers up to another body of water, Lake Hiawatha. It’s along Minnehaha Creek and all the way to Minnehaha Regional Park as part of the Grand Rounds trail system. For a more relaxing outdoor experience, Lake Nokomis has two beaches, a playground and fishing piers. The lake freezes over in the winter, giving residents an outdoor ice skating venue that also hosts the U.S. Pond Hockey Championship, an event known for its friendly competition and an onshore beer tent.

Nokomis community provides necessities and food
Wenonah is part of the Nokomis East community, which has an unofficial Main Street along 34th Avenue. The avenue has excellent local restaurants, shops, businesses, a grocery store, the public library, a post office and a hardware store . Berry Sweet Kitchen is one of the family-owned restaurants along 34th Avenue, offering a casual café experience and a full bar, as well as breads and pastries to take home. Community favorite Fat Lorenzo’s serves “Italian in a Big Way” with freshly made pizza and specializing in hoagies and gelato.
