Quimby
Neighborhood in San Jose, California
Santa Clara County 95148
Traditional homes built in the 1970s and ‘80s
Quimby’s homes are situated along curved streets and cul-de-sacs with very little through traffic thanks to its out-of-the-way location. Built in the late 1970s and ‘80s, homes here are typically spacious with open floor plans and high ceilings. Lots are between 7,000 and 8,000 square feet, offering plenty of room for landscaping, gardening and backyard get-togethers. Tall palm trees, evergreens and oaks peak out from a sea of rooftops, offering some shade during San Jose’s simmering summer months. Prices range from between $1.7 million and $2.3 million. Safety is also part of the neighborhood’s appeal. It gets a CAP Index Crime Score of 1 out of 10, compared to 4 nationally. The neighborhood has a community park with a hilltop vista
Groesbeck Hill Park sits at the corner of the neighborhood. It has 26 acres of open space in addition to several sport courts, a playground and picnic tables. Walking paths wind up to a hilltop at the center of the park that looks all the way out to downtown San Jose. A little farther out, residents can take advantage of their proximity to Joseph D. Grant County Park, the largest regional park in Santa Clara County. Its verdant landscape stretches across hills, valleys and mountains encompassing more than 10,000 acres. “As you keep going up Quimby Road toward the park, the road gets steep and windy. It feels like you’ve escaped to another country,” DeTar says.Highly rated public schools are within walking distance
Quimby is zoned for some highly rated public schools, a major draw for prospective homebuyers. The neighborhood is split between three elementary schools: Cedar Grove Elementary, which gets a B rating from Niche; Norwood Creek Elementary; and Carolyn A. Clark Elementary. The latter two both earn A-minus ratings. The next step is A-minus-rated Quimby Oak Middle School followed by A-rated Evergreen Valley High School. All these schools are within walking or biking distance for many residents. Evergreen Valley High is especially sought after for its robust academic offerings, including its many Advanced Placement and college prep courses. The school won the California Distinguished Schools Award in 2021.
Wildfires in the countryside near Quimby
Its proximity to the mountains puts the neighborhood at an increased risk for wildfires. To help protect residents from fires, Santa Clara County created a Community Wildfire Protection Plan in 2016 to further address safety in fire-prone areas.Getting around town from downtown San Jose to Silicon Valley
Quimby residents are in the eastern limits of San Jose, and commuting may be challenging — the nearest major highway is about 5 miles west. Those heading downtown can get there in about 20 minutes, depending on traffic, and a trip to Silicon Valley could take up to 45 minutes. The neighborhood has several bus stops along Quimby Avenue for those who rely on public transportation. It’s about 6 miles to Regional Medical Center, a hospital and emergency room established in San Jose in 1965.Evergreen Village Square is the nearest shopping plaza
For shopping and dining, residents can hop in the car and head to Evergreen Village Square about a mile away. This small shopping plaza is anchored by a public square that hosts a farmers market every Wednesday and Sunday morning all year round. Surrounding the square are restaurants and shops, including Curry Pizza House, a chain that serves up pizza with an Indian-influenced twist. Groceries and everyday goods are found next door at Walmart Neighborhood Market. For everything else, it’s about 10 miles to the breweries, upscale shops and high-end restaurants of downtown San Jose.
