Located in the heart of north central Austin, McCallum High School and Fine Arts Academy was established in 1953 as the second high school in the Austin Independent School District. McCallum is renowned for its fine arts program; in 1993, the school became home of the district’s first fine arts intensive high school program, the Austin Independent School District Fine Arts Academy. Offering programs such as visual arts, dance, theatre, cinematic arts, voice, instrumental band, orchestra, classical guitar and collaborative piano, the program accepts students living anywhere in Austin if they are accepted following a competitive admissions process. The arts program has garnered a national reputation, and in 2015 was named the Grammy Foundation’s National Signature School as the best public school music program in the United States. In addition to the Fine Arts Academy, McCallum High provides students with challenging academic pathways, competitive sports teams and clubs for diverse interests. McCallum Knights compete in more than a dozen sports, including baseball, basketball, football, soccer, swimming, tennis and golf. Special education, honors, and advanced placement courses are available. Upperclassmen can take dual-enrollment courses at Austin Community College.

McCallum has great culture. So many different types of people attend that it makes it hard not to find somewhere to fit in. It also has very kind teachers that are unconditionally supportive. However, it can often lack in regards to academics. Luckily, most students are more interested in arts where they are taught well and pushed to their limits.

My first son graduated from McCallum in 2022. While there are some challenges at McCallum, it is a good school that offers students a range of different opportunities. Our son enjoyed the business courses. He also took advantage of many different opportunities for advanced learning, including AP and...

The fine arts program (orchestra is my connection) is excellent, earning a Grammy Award - yes, THAT Grammy in 2015. All arts disciplines produce superb quality performance and display pieces. The rigor is there too, both in arts and in general education subjects, and sports teams are competitive, bu...

My child is currently a student and these teachers, assistant principals and principal do not stand by their mission. Majority of the teachers are there simple just to get a check. They have no interest if the kid succeed or not. Some of the teachers are just as childish as some of the kids. They la...
