Established in 1922 and primarily serving the city of Burbank, John Muir began with 7th and 8th grade only and has a rich history of growth, change and evolution. Currently, the school serves grades 6-8 and enrolls 1,420 students. It was named Burbank’s first California Distinguished School in 1988.
John Muir Middle School offers a comprehensive academic curriculum as well as a strong arts program featuring band/orchestra, choir, theater and visual arts. The school offers counselors for academic, social and emotional support.
John Muir also provides afterschool programs that supports students with homework and tutoring. Available programs include the homework club as well as the Boys and Girls Club’s afterschool program.
Fun facts about John Muir: A ghost affectionately known as “Susan” supposedly inhabits the 200 Hall, and according to several students, has been spotted in the restrooms there. Famous alumni of John Muir Middle School include “Gossip Girl”’s Blake Lively, and Kelly Blatz, star of “Aaron Stone” on Disney XD.

Our family has had three students go through Muir. My kids have liked almost all of their teachers and they’ve had great experiences inside and outside of the classroom. The teachers are effective in teaching and seem to really care about the kids. Dr. Miller is a great leader and great principal.
