Boulder is about 30 miles northwest of Denver with a population of around 107,700. The city sits where the Rocky Mountains meet the plains, creating a landscape of forests and valleys with views of the mountains as the backdrop. Founded in 1858, the city was originally inhabited by several Native American tribes, then settled by pioneers searching for gold along Boulder Creek. The former mining town has since become a luxurious city and dynamic college town as it is also home to the University of Colorado Boulder.
While many current residents came to the area in the 1970s to work at the IBM Data Center, today there are various prominent companies in the aerospace, bioscience and cleantech industries. Boulder’s city parks and natural areas
The city has over 45,000 acres of preserved wilderness and open spaces and 150 miles of hiking trails. The area is known for its iconic flatirons, which are sandstone slab formations on the surrounding foothills. There are several mountains nearby such as Mount Sanitas and Sugarloaf. The Boulder Reservoir is a 700-acre body of water about 6 miles north of downtown that has a sandy beach.
In addition to its natural areas, Boulder has over 60 public parks and green spaces, as well as three recreation centers with indoor facilities, located in North Boulder, South Boulder and East Boulder. Foothills Community Park is a 65-acre greenspace with a community garden.

According to the National Association of REALTORS® Q2 2024 Local Market Report, the city’s median price was 53.1% higher than the national median. Boulder is divided into 10 main sub-communities. Homes along Boulder’s foothills share a luxurious status, with architectural styles ranging from two-story Craftsman homes to mountain estates. The foothills area’s listing price range is $1.3 million to $7.5 million. “Boulder is blessed with close neighborhood districts with all sorts of fun community hangout spots,” Tayer says. South Boulder is a primarily residential neighborhood with traditional single-family homes, while downtown is a trendy enclave with lofts, condos and apartment complexes. The Crossroads neighborhood sits adjacent to downtown.

Downtown’s local flair and 29th Street’s national offerings
There are two main shopping and dining districts in Boulder. In the center of Downtown, Pearl Steet is a pedestrian mall lined with local clothing boutiques, bookstores and novelty shops. “Pearl Street Mall is a historic center for our commerce. It’s both an attractive shopping and entertainment center,” Tayer says. Eclectic restaurants range from casual bistros with outdoor seating to fine-dining options. Frasca Food and Wine is an Italian eatery that has earned a Michelin star. There are also two food halls: Avanti and Rosetta Hall. Downtown’s nighttime scene is popular across dozens of bars, breweries and distilleries. The second location for shopping and dining is the Twenty Ninth Street Mall, for a collection of name-brand retailers and is surrounded by big box stores. Boulder Junction and Ideal Market are additional areas with a collection of restaurants – everything from local brunch spots and international cuisine to regional chains and fast food. “We have such a wide diversity of culinary and dining experiences; it makes Boulder unique,” Tayer continues.

A creative community worth celebrating
Named one of America’s Most Artistic Towns by Expedia, Boulder is decorated with hundreds of murals, with downtown as the epicenter of the city’s artistic scene. There are 14 galleries with everything from paintings to sculptures to photography, plus several theaters and venues hosting performances by the city’s ballet troupe, orchestra, opera and symphony. The Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art has rotating exhibits. The Pearl Street Arts Festival is an annual event where hundreds of local and regional artists showcase their works. Top-rated school district and higher education
The Boulder Valley School District (BVSD) is the city’s public school system, serving over 29,000 students across 37 elementary, 18 middle and 12 high schools, which also include five charter and nine non-traditional schools. BVSD earns an A rating from Niche, which also ranks it as the top school district in the Denver area and second in Colorado.
Shining Mountain Waldorf School, for kindergarten through 12th grade, is private, receiving a B grade. Additionally, Boulder is a college town – home to the University of Colorado Boulder campus. CU Boulder enrolls roughly 38,400 students, and offers over 50 majors, 25 minors and 10 certificates while generating $3.3 billion annually. Boulder experiences all four seasons despite its high altitude and over 300 days of sunshine per year, which contributes to the city’s moderate and dry climate. Certain areas across the city may be at a potential risk of wildfires. The Boulder Fire-Rescue Department has a Wildland Division dedicated to preventing them. In the winter, Boulder can see anywhere between 25 and 46 days of snow – with an average annual snowfall of 89 inches. The city maintains a response to snowstorms, offering levels of services, including plowing and shoveling to areas around the city.

Colorado’s Regional Transportation District (RTD) has 12 local and seven regional bus routes throughout the city. A handful of park-and-ride bus stations provide easier access for commuters. There are multiple highway systems, including U.S. Route 36, which runs north to south and leads about 30 miles southeast to Denver. State Routes 7, 93 and 119 all lead through and around Boulder. The Boulder Municipal Airport is a general aviation airport that provides private and local emergency and medical flights. For commercial flights, the Denver International Airport is 42 miles away.
