Avon, the duct tape capital of the world, is home to the famous Duck-branded tape. The community comes together annually for the three-day Avon Heritage Festival, sponsored by the Duck brand. “They have floats made 100% from duct tape with winners and prizes,” says Wendy Rounds, Realtor with Howard Hanna Realty, who has more than 30 years' experience in marketing and sales. “People take pride in being from where duct tape is made.” While the Duck brand is a draw for tourists and provides jobs for those in the community, it’s not the real reason people are settling into the area. “People move to Avon for the small town feel and the proximity to new businesses that are coming to the area,” Rounds says. For all your necessities, you can visit Avon Commons Shopping Center on Detroit Road, where Costco provides groceries and home essentials in bulk, or visit Heinen’s Grocery Store for a varied selection. While in the area, you can shop for clothing or home goods at Marshalls or Kohl's. “The area is growing tremendously,” Round says. “Many of these businesses weren’t here 10 or so years ago.” Business isn't the only thing that's booming in the city. According to Rounds, new housing construction is growing in areas that branch off the main roads. Single-family townhomes line residential blocks throughout Concord Village, a subdivision with homes on the market for $389,900 that were built in 2021. Homebuyers in the area will be spoiled for choice of newer homes and legacy properties. There's a mix of architectural styles, including modest ranch-style, cozy Craftsman and large colonial homes. Things on the market are moving fast, Rounds says, so you’ll have to keep your eyes on the market if you’re considering living in Avon. Prices range from the low $200,000s for older ranch-style homes to around $1 million for larger new construction and homes with land. The median sale price of homes is $370,000, and according to Rounds, taxes are lower compared to other nearby cities. Schools in Avon earn high rankings from the rating website Niche.com. Weekdays for younger children in Avon start at either East Elementary, which has earned a B+ on Niche, or Heritage Elementary, with a Niche grade of A. Students graduate from Avon Middle School (A from Niche) before attending Avon High School (also an A), home of the Eagles. According to Niche, Avon High boasts a graduation rate of 98%. The area is filled with golf courses and country clubs, offering a perfect way to spend an afternoon outdoors. Red Tail Golf Club is a private 18-hole course woven between slopes and even plains designed by Robert von Hagge, a notable golf course architect of over 250 fairways. Alternatively, the Bob-O-Link Golf Course is open to the public and offers a 36-hole layout with four distinct 9-hole courses. Strengthen your sense of community by joining a league at one of the clubs or courses. In Avon, you’ll be a short drive from Lake Erie, the fourth-largest lake in North America. Cast your line to catch trout, bass or salmon, which are all common throughout the freshwater lake. On the weekend, pop into the intimate family-owned restaurants that maintain a small-town vibe, including Antica Italian Kitchen & Bar on Detroit Road. Allow your tastebuds to travel to the Mediterranean through the indoor-outdoor dining experience and classic Italian dishes. Established in 2013, Istanbul Grill brings traditional Turkish cuisine to this Cleveland suburb for more local flavor. And for dessert, Mitchell’s Ice Cream offers locally made and sourced sweets.
